Dancing in My Skin
YOU ARE NOT ALONE. YOUR BLACKNESS IS WELCOME HERE
Although we, black and brown women, are given the passion and talent to move our bodies the way our spirit dances we are faced with a minimum opportunity to exercise our dancing souls. This, most times, discourages us to pursue our dance goals. Dancing in My Skin is a safe space for support , opportunities and artistic freedom for the black dancing body.
Dancing in My Skin
My Story Told...
Dancing has been a passion of mine since I started praise dancing at church. Later I would be introduced to the performing arts at Ballet Arts. Thankfully I got to continue my dance career at Western Carolina University AND North Carolina Central University. I’ve had the opportunity to further my career in Cherokee as a dancer in the Unto These Hills outdoor theatre. I have taught dance to young people from pre-k to high school. However for some reason I have not been able to exceed that professional threshold with dancing on a pro cheer/dance team for a professional sport organization. As I began to understand European History (the black presence) I began to unravel and connect the dots on why its sooo hard for women of color to make professional teams, dance companies, college teams etc. The answer I found came from the simple fact that do to European ideals of race through their standard of beauty( white body structure, features and skin color) is women of color have to fit into that construct as much as possible. AND even if we do there can only be a few. This leads to emotional trauma of feeling alone, wanting to change our body, skin color, and or hair. I wanted to create a space for my dance sisters to know it’s not them and they aren’t alone in their struggles.
As a dance historian and current high school history and dance teacher, I must continue to share the knowledge and experience of the black/brown dancer. This means positively impact young women and men through both teaching the movement and historical aspect of the art form.
We offer dance sessions as well as lecture sessions for men and women of all ages. Please contact us in the message box below for more information. We are based in North Carolina but not limited to any location.
